I have a pretty weird obsession. I didn't even realize it as such until my dear girlfriend brought it to my attention, it comes very natural to me; I loathe carrying around stuff I'm not currently using. I can bring myself to drag it around if the item in question is very small, fits in a pocket and I'm likely to use it or need it during the day.
Naturally, a backpack is way way, way out of the question. Those are unbelievably cumbersome. I don't understand how some people carry them around just to put their wallet in, or worse: "just in case".
I hate carrying around groceries or other items that can be picked up later. For instance, if I'm downtown, I can't bring myself to pick up a box of milk (or anything else) in a nearby store and bring that item home, instead of picking it up at the grocery store slightly out of the way but closer to my apartment.
My stereo-headset for my mobile phone is a borderline case. I don't really need it except while going to and from work (since my phone has a radio built-in), but it's not that obtrusive since it can lie on my desk while I'm at the office. Then again, that opens the considerable possibility that I'll forget it here.
I did bring it today, but I'm not so sure I will in the future. See, now I'm about to go home, except I'm not going home - I'm going to my girlfriend's mom's house - an exception I wasn't counting on. I guess it'll be alright, I can leave the headset in my right side coat pocket, still though, the situation makes the headset very nearly too cumbersome.
In any given case, choosing the logistically most efficient solution for any given object is, of course, essential. Unfortunately, the morning radio show on channel P3 is very good. Oh, the anxiety..

Between home and work --and let's not forget the children's things-- I'm afraid I'll lose something.
I spend more time looking for lost items and trying to remember where I put them. I just think of my backpack as a mobile, uh, desk? drawer? iDisk?
Now, what I'd like is a keychain I can put on my belt, not in my pant pockets. I now look like a chipmunk with my car keys in one pocket and my house, office, and assorted other keys in my other pocket.
I want something that hangs on my belt loop but has a retractable cord so I can use a key without having to remove the chain from my belt. Know any place I could find something like this? Googling "keychain" just doesn't do it.

So you are acctually able to leave home without pens, notebook, wallet, mobile, glasses, some magazines, a book, and all that other stuff you just have to bring along?! No way. I ain't going nowhere without my backpack. Those times I forget it, I curse myself because I will naturally need to write something down or I remember I just have to read that new magazine. I'm with Jeff. The backpack is an iDesk.
I bring it along. Just in case. I may look like a bum, but I do that even without the backpack, sooo...

=] On carrying things around, on her purse, my wife beats you completely. The only thing missing is caceroles and a stove. Everything else she carries!
