UserLand and Necho

  Jul 04, 2003

Dave Winer has some confusing comments regarding the project formerly known as Echo, currently known as Necho or Not-Echo and god knows what in the future:

I don't think Google wants to control blogspace. I think Evan does, and there's a disconnect. I don't like the way UserLand is omitted from his list of competitors. It gives me the chills. Dave Winer

The only part of the webpage that Dave refers to (with a link) that is even remotely related to what he says it is, reads like this:

At least two other major blogging tool and service companies (SixApart and Live Journal) have pledged their support for this new initiative, and we're working with them (as well as others) to define the spec up-front. Evan Williams

The reason UserLand isn't mentioned there is because they never did "pledge support" for the Necho project and have chosen to not participate what-so-ever in the process of shaping the format. Dave offered his "tentative endorsement" all the while complaining about how much of a complete disaster the idea is. That's pretty fucking far from "pledged support" in my not so humble opinion.

I don't know, maybe I'm missing something, maybe he's referring to something completely different than the page he's linking to. It certainly wouldn't be the first time he's throwing accusations left and right without specifying what he means.

  1. I would suggest that you stop now in trying to figure out Dave Winer. It's an impossible task and I'm sure there are better things you could be doing with your time. ;-)
