Steam

Valve Software's Half-Life is the worlds most popular online multiplayer game. According to GameSpy's statistics, Half-Life currently has 28752 active servers, compared with the next most popular game (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory) which has 1054 active servers. No other game on the face of the earth has more than 4000 active servers. Half-Life has 28752.

Let's just say that Half-Life, which was released in November 1998, is hugely popular to this day.

Valve Software has just released (the first beta of) Steam; a program used to download and patch games, browse online servers, chat, etc. Through Steam, Valve is giving away Half-Life and several modifications of it, such as CounterStrike and Team Fortress Classic. Steam is free.

Meanwhile, companies like Nintendo are in rage over the fact that some people download and run old classics like Super Mario Bros and Ice Climber on their PCs; games which they no longer make or sell.
