Naming Necho
Jul 25, 2003
The format/API that shall not be named -- formerly known as Pie, formerly known as Echo, formerly known as Necho and (thank god) formerly known as Atom -- is finally being named.
Well, sort of, the "final vote" is coming up, scheduled to start at July 31st, and to close at August 15th. Unlike previous naming efforts, when names were just thrown up in the air, voted on, majority ruled, and then we checked for trademark and/or project conflicts, suitability, etc; this time the proposed names are being thoroughly examined, as to wether they adhere to the project name guidelines, and if they conflict with trademarks and/or other projects.
I'm very pleased with the way things are going this time, although I have certain personal preferences, almost all of the "clear" candidates (those which have no relevant conflicts and adhere to the guidelines) are perfectly good names. I think "Axon" and "Dada" would be pretty horrible names, but the rest are good names, some better than others.
I like "Sygnal", which should come as no surprise to those who know I submitted it in the first place. I also like "Loki", "Elbo" and "Feedcast" (which I initially had some reservations against).
I'll cross my fingers and hope the name will stick, this time.
This is my first time actively participating in a Wiki, it's been a rather odd experience. The implications of the fact that nobody and everybody decides becomes extremely obvious at times; especially when a herd of people runs off in a certain direction just because whoever they interpret as their "leader" does so first.
That's not a bad thing per se, these leaders are influential for a reason; they're competent people, some with extreme experience in their respective fields.
I don't mean to say that there are any mischevious stunts being pulled off, but the format is largely being shaped by a few "influential" figures, whose directions most people seems to follow. Not all the time, and not completely, but the obvious strong influence that a few key figures possess is obvious and undeniable.
The syntactical discussions seems to have moved to a mailing list, instead of the Wiki, probably to exclude some of the people who aren't committed enough to join it, which is fine by me. Let's see if we can wrap this up already.

If debates about XML formats are pretty much pointless, you would think debates about the names for such formats would be even more so.
