Wired on Real
Apr 06, 2004
There's a new article in Wired, entitled "Find the Download in a Haystack", which is actually a follow-up story to my posts on Real Player and Real Networks earlier (Real Obnoxious, Real Reply, Real Proof).
Wired's reporter, Katie Dean, contacted me shortly after I had published my posts, we did an interview and I got her in touch with my sources. Well, some of my sources, at least. I only managed to contact two of them, the others either left false contact information or didn't respond to my e-mail, for whatever reason that may be.
Once Katie had all the sources and information she needed, which seems to have been a lot, she decided to skip the disgruntled user perspective and my interview was cut. I damn near made it into Wired. Close, but no cigar. It's ok though.
Katie was very nice throughout, she even apologized for cutting me out of the article, since I spent "quite a bit of time" answering her questions, she assures me that I was an important part of the process though. Well, I didn't spend very much time answering the questions, and I'm not terribly disappointed about it, so it's quite alright.
I think she was a bit too kind to Real Networks though. The problems with Real Player and Real Networks aren't in the past, as one might think by reading the article.

Instead of quoting Jakob Nielsen she could have quoted you. You're more informend and competent than Nielsen on Real's tricky policies.
Oh, well, congrats for "near made it into Wired". Still, your posts are far more interesting than Katie Dean's one.

My first reaction was "Whoa!..Tomas covered this before you!" Only after I visited your site during the daily rounds did I figure out that you had been contacted.
What can I say..congratulations. I still can't figure out what Jakob had to do with this but Katie prolly had to go with a more established figure I suppose. And that really stinks!
Your articles were more lucid and interesting and nailed my feelings on Real and its products. Its good to see good journalism being recognised.
Kudos and keep it going!

I bet you're a *little* disappointed though? :)

swimp: "Dissappointed" isn't the right word for it. Think of it like this instead: I'm glad to have inspired and contributed to an article, that's pretty cool too, but I'm not overly extatic about it. Disappointed? Not quite.
